Originally started months ago after reading someone's proposal for an Italian line of battleships for the game World of Warships made before it was officially announced. I wanted to make my own proposal myself.
My first draft was based on the 1921 battlecruiser proposal made by Italian engineer Ferdinando Cassone. A 'battlecruiser' that somehow carried eight 18 in(456mm) guns and an undetermined assortment of 6in secondary guns, an 18in armored belt, 6in upper belt and magically reached 35 knots, all under 45,000 tonnes.
That's impossible. I ended up keeping the weapons and the armor, while scaling the speed down to 32 knots and increasing the displacement.
The ship then went under a redesign after Wargaming released previews of the new Italian battleship line. Some were critical of the design, and I decided to integrate some of the critique into my ship. As such, I've replaced all of the 6in and 90mm guns with a uniform battery of 135mm DP guns, I've also decided to go for a modernized route like the Republique, and gave it a cold war AA suite of a dozen OTO 76mm/62 Allargato automatic guns with a lovely 60 rpm.
